Join me, a certified Peru guide, as I take you through the best national parks to visit. Whether you’re an adventurer, a wildlife enthusiast, or simply seeking to immerse yourself in stunning landscapes, these parks offer something for everyone.

Why Peru’s National Parks are a Must-Visit

Peru is home to over 15 national parks, each offering a unique glimpse into the country’s vast biodiversity and natural beauty. From the desert coast through the towering peaks of the Andes to the dense Amazon jungle, these parks showcase the incredible variety of ecosystems that Peru has to offer. What makes Peru’s national parks truly special is their unparalleled diversity. Here, you don’t just witness nature—you become part of it.

Exploring Peru’s Best National Parks

Let me walk you through the five most impressive national parks in Peru. These are the parks I’ve spent countless hours exploring with visitors, and they never fail to amaze me with their beauty, wildlife, and their representation of every region of Peru.

Manú National Park: A Jungle of Biodiversity

Manú National Park is one of the most biologically diverse places on the planet. Located in the Amazon basin, this park covers over 15,000 square kilometers of rainforest and is a paradise for wildlife lovers. Here, you can spot jaguars, giant otters, and over 1,000 species of birds.

Tip: The best way to explore Manú is through a multi-day guided tour, where you can stay in eco-lodges deep in the jungle. Always travel with a certified guide, as they know the hidden trails and the best times for wildlife spotting. Make sure to bring insect repellent and be prepared for humid conditions!

Huascarán National Park: Peru’s Mountain Paradise

Huascarán National Park is the crown jewel of the Andes. It’s home to Peru’s highest peak, Mount Huascarán, standing at 6,768 meters. This park is a hiker’s and climber’s dreamland, with trails winding through pristine glacial lakes, towering snow-capped peaks, and ancient pre-Incan ruins.

Tip: If you’re not ready for serious mountaineering, I recommend hiking the Laguna 69, Laguna Paron trail. It’s a challenging hike, but the view at the top is worth every step. The best time to hike is from May to September, when the weather is clear.

Paracas National Reserve: Desert Meets Ocean

Paracas National Reserve is unlike any other park in Peru. Here, you’ll find a dramatic desert coastline that meets the deep blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. Paracas is renowned for its rich marine wildlife, where visitors can observe sea lions basking, dolphins leaping, and the rare Humboldt penguin nesting along the shores.

Tip: The best way to explore Paracas is by boat. I always recommend taking a boat tour to the Ballestas Islands, often called the “Poor Man’s Galápagos” due to the incredible wildlife. Don’t forget your camera—you’ll want to capture the sea lions sunbathing on the rocks!

Tambopata National Reserve: Into the Heart of the Amazon

Tambopata is another Amazonian treasure, offering a more accessible yet equally immersive jungle experience compared to Manú. This reserve is home to thousands of species of plants and animals, and it’s one of the best places in Peru to experience the Amazon in all its glory.

Tip: One of my favorite spots in Tambopata is the Clay Lick, where hundreds of macaws gather to eat the mineral-rich clay. To get the best view, plan to arrive early in the morning—around 5 AM. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience you don’t want to miss.

Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve: A Hidden Gem in Peru

Established in 1979, Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve is a protected area nestled between Arequipa, Moquegua, and Puno. This reserve offers striking landscapes, from vast high-altitude plains and majestic volcanoes to serene salt lagoons and is home to unique wildlife, including vicuñas, flamingos, and the elusive Andean fox.

Tip: For those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure, this reserve is perfect. One of its highlights is the stunning Salinas Salt Lagoon, where you can witness flocks of flamingos against a backdrop of majestic volcanoes. Exploring the reserve with a guide is highly recommended to fully appreciate its hidden wonders and biodiversity.

Best Time to Visit Peru’s National Parks

Peru’s national parks can be visited year-round, but some seasons are better than others depending on where you’re going.

  • Amazon parks (Manú, Tambopata): The dry season from May to October is the best time to visit. The trails are less muddy, and wildlife is easier to spot.
  • Andes parks (Huascarán, Salinas y Aguada Blanca): The best time to hike is during the dry season, which is also from May to September. Be prepared for freezing nights, especially at higher altitudes.
  • Coastal parks (Paracas): Paracas can be visited any time of year, but if you want to avoid the intense desert heat, it’s best to go between April and November.

Expert Tips for Visiting Peru’s National Parks

Pack Smart:

Always pack for the terrain you’re visiting. For the Amazon, lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing is essential to stay comfortable in the humidity. In the Andes, dressing in layers is key, as temperatures can fluctuate drastically, especially at night.

Stay Hydrated:

Especially when visiting parks in higher altitudes like Huascarán, Salinas and Aguada Blanca, hydration is key. Carry plenty of water, and consider drinking coca tea to help with altitude sickness.

Respect Nature:

Many of these parks are home to fragile ecosystems. Always follow your guide’s instructions and leave no trace behind. Keep a respectful distance from wildlife to avoid disturbing them.

Hire Local Guides:

Whether it’s navigating the jungle trails or hiking the high-altitude paths, local guides know these areas best. Plus, by hiring a guide, you’re supporting the local economy.
